First, there were wood garage doors, then one-piece steel garage doors. After that, there were sectional acrylic garage doors. Next, there were steel rolled-formed sectional panel garage doors, which have been the predominate garage door system for nearly four decades. Until the last decade, no matter the décor of the home’s exterior, the garage door was like a huge bandage that lessened the home’s overall curb appeal. Just take a drive though the housing developments in Lake and Sumter Counties and you will see beautiful homes with stucco and a Spanish-tropical look. Then on the front or side of the house, you will see a huge 16’x7’ white steel door that has nothing to do with the home’s décor. Look at your own house. Does your garage door add or take away from your home’s curb appeal?

Clopay®—one of the nation’s leading providers of garage doors—has created a line of garage doors, which challenges the homeowner to, “Imagine your home reinvented.” These are not your normal garage doors. In many cases, it is like comparing steel army barracks to a mountain cabin.

What makes Clopay’s new lines of garage doors so interesting is that each door meet’s Florida’s tough hurricane code requirements. Having beauty and style cannot come at the expense of hurricane protection. To be sold in the state of Florida, each door must pass strict testing, engineering analysis, and wind testing. This means that most of the strengthening bars and supports are put on the inside of the garage door and along the guiding rails to the side. The garage door is considered an integral part of the home’s structural envelope and cannot fail, even if winds reach 130 miles per hour.

Before you order a garage door, you will need to answer a few questions. First and foremost, do you have the skills to install a garage door? 90 percent of homeowners should never try to install a garage door, because winding the springs can be very dangerous. It is best to purchase it installed so you can have a labor and material warranty.

Next, determine the size you need. Garage doors vary in size—depending on headroom, height of the ceiling, size of the opening needed, and type of construction. Then, decide what type of garage door looks good with your home. Nice stylish doors cost more—what is your home’s value proposition in the long-term? Finally, be sure you buy the properly wind-rated garage door for your region in Florida. There are multiple ratings depending on where you live.

Clopay has done a lot with its Gallery® Collection, which is used extensively throughout Florida. Various light configurations as well as options for panel sizing brings new lines to home design. The company does a good job offering the insulation and structural benefits to ensure the door will perform for an extended time.

Clopay’s Coachman® Collection offers a wide variety of panel configurations that add more lines and dimensions to any home. This takes a regular garage door to a stylish level, which can blend well with different exterior décor. Clopay’s Canyon Ridge® Collection not only changes the panel design, it offers a real wood look through composites. These doors are used in larger homes or homes with a rustic design—a perfect match for homes in horse country.

Clopay’s Avante® Collection is very popular in the Orlando area, because it offers a see-through garage door panel, which is great for modern shops and garages to showcase cars and tours. The sleek lines and various types of clear, tinted, and obscure glass provide the degree of privacy the homeowner desires. This garage door is very popular for modern and elegant designs.

The most important thing to remember on your next new home or remodeling project—when it comes to garage doors you have a lot of options nowadays. Too many times, homeowners think they are stuck with the same garage door options from the 1990s. Clopay wants you to imagine your home reinvented.
